One word.

Know it, understand what it means.  Learn how to show the word.  Practice it.  And practice it more.  It doesn’t come naturally for everyone.

In a leadership or management role, you can always use your title to muscle your way over others.  It’ll work short term and you’ll get your way.

But let me tell you — after being in Corporate America for over 20 years, I’ve seen CEOs who were tyrants — who mistreated people simply because of their own ego or for greed.  And now the karma bus is picking them up and taking them for a ride.  You know that ride that impacts your profitability, reputation and key talent who won’t work with you any longer?  Yea, that one.

You don’t have to like people.  You don’t even have to be a likable person.  You just have to have the ability to walk along the path of another individual and relate.

You’ll be remembered for it.  When that karma bus makes the stop for you, look in the mirror and smile.  Be pleased at who you see.
